Can I Take Tylenol During Pregnancy?

taking tylenol in pregnancy is safe when consulting your provider for advice

Often it’s hard to remember all the rules - no sushi, limit wine and caffeine, even deli meats are off limits (which was one of my cravings with my baby!) due to chance of listeria contaminants. So what happens when you get sick or have some persistent pain and need some relief? Is it REALLY ok to take medication during pregnancy?

Grading Prescriptions

All medications prescribed to women during pregnancy, including over the counter medications, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and Ibuprofen are given a class of A-F for their safety precautions. Prescriptions and medicines falling into the more favorable A-B ratings have been tested and deemed safe by the FDA and APA for short term, or in some cases, routine, ingestion during pregnancy.

Tylenol, or acetaminophen, taken short term, is considered a class B medication and is safe to take when needed in pregnancy. A class B medication has demonstrated no fetal risk but there have been no controlled studies in pregnant women, nor have adverse effects been seen in animal or first trimester human studies. Acetaminophen crosses the placenta.

When In Doubt - Call

Sometimes even with the go ahead from the APA, it can be tough to decide whether you want to take a medication. Always err on the side of benefits vs. risks. If you innately feel that taking a certain medication will only cause you stress and worry, then consider alternatives to medication. Stress relievers and other aids like heat, chiropractic care, meditation and acupuncture are helpful for non-illness related needs, and other illnesses often abate on their own within a few days.

If you truly feel the need to take Tylenol, however, rest assured that you have the green light, and consult with your physician for dosage and timeline for taking it!
