Why Hire A Doula For Your Cesarean?

cesarean birth can be beautiful with a doula by your side

The biggest surprise to some of our potential clients is hearing that we’ll gladly support them in the event of a Cesarean. Even more surprising, clients are thrilled to hear how we can support them when a Cesarean is planned. Whether baby is breech or there have been a change of plans necessitating a surgical birth, or if routine Cesarean is the most sound choice and decision for subsequent births, we love to see our clients smoothly into recovery and the postpartum period. Here’s why we’re the most sought after in event of a planned Cesarean birth:

1. Pre-Operative Support

During planning and then in the hours prior to the birth, we can help you work with your surgical operative team to have some systems in place for a gentle, wonderful day. From pain and nausea management, to arms free and access to baby skin-to-skin in the OR, we can help facilitate questions and dialogue to make your wishes and wonderful day supported by all members of your team.

Often the waiting for the birth is stressful. We can keep the mood, room and atmosphere calm and the emotions managed and cherished. When you’re taken back to the OR, we can remain in the PACU.

2. Partner Support

At some point during the cesarean, your partner will be coming to the recovery unit with baby. We can support your partner and you by either assisting with baby and your partner’s care, or coming into the OR when allowed to help you during the remainder of the procedure. Either way, you will know your baby and your family are in great hands and able to enjoy those moments.

3. Assistance In Recovery

Need to manage diet, liquids, nausea and more? The immediate recovery from a cesarean can leave many feeling groggy or strange from medication. We are there to assist with baby, nursing or feeding tricks and tools, pain and comfort measures for your initial recovery and making sure your partner is feeling hydrated, fed and comfortable.

4. On Call Support For Questions

After assisting with the first few magic hours postpartum, you’ll need to rest. We’re here if you need us, for support, questions, or help with your baby when you’re recovering in bed. Your doulas can literally do the ‘heavy lifting’ of baby for you, and we’re not remiss to staying and helping your overnight care in hospital if needed!

5. Smooth Transition Home

When you return home, your navigation of home may be a bit different. Needing to take it easy is even more important while you’re abdominals are bound and recovering. Driving will be off the table for awhile, as will taking long walks up and down stairs and lifting anything heavier than your baby. We’re there to help with the day to day tasks in home, as well as help you recover, rest and heal, and take care of your little one(s).

Find out why our labor and postpartum doula teams are such a welcome sight for a smooth and beautiful birth experience in the operating room!
