You’ve been wondering what this day would be like for months. Baby is finally here! You may have prepared for interventions during labor, but have you thought about the interventions for your newborn? Above all, it may depend on your provider, hospital, or state regulations, so make sure to ask any questions you have before it’s go-time! Here are some of the most routine newborn procedures.

APGAR Score

When baby arrives, your medical professionals will summarize their assessment with an APGAR score. APGAR stands for Appearance (skin color - pale, pink, or blue), Pulse (heart rate), Grimace (crying or coughing), Activity (flexing of arms and legs), and Respiration (strength of cry and breathing). This score will be documented at one minute after birth, and again at five minutes after birth. This evaluation is mostly unobtrusive, and will likely be done while baby is on your chest (if there were no previous indicators needing immediate medical attention).

Erythromycin Eye Ointment:

This ointment prevents eye infections caused by any bacteria that may be picked up while baby made their way through the vaginal canal. In addition, if you have an active STI or STD, this ointment can prevent blindness. If you have a C-section, this procedure is not necessary.

Vitamin K is essential for clotting our blood, and babies are born Vitamin K deficient. There is an oral alternative, though studies have not found it as effective as the shot.

First Bath

Hospital regulations may vary for your baby’s first bath. If done too soon, it can interrupt breastfeeding, lower baby’s temperature, and remove vernix (that waxy covering on baby’s skin that welcomes good bacteria and fights against infection). You can ask to delay this until you are able to assist in the hospital, or you can give baby their first bath at home.
