When you’re formula feeding, you certainly have a ton of options. Between brands, probiotics included, gentler formulas for newborns, organic, the sky is the limit!

A common question I’m often asked when working with families postpartum is whether to purchase the cans of powder formula, or the pre-mixed versions. Is one really better than the other?

Here’s my take on it!

With powder, you need to measure out the appropriate amount and add distilled water to the bottle to make on demand. This takes a bit of time, and can be a harder set of instructions in the middle of the night with a crying baby, or out on the go if you need to have the exact amount on hand.

Powder needs to be mixed until the particles are completely dissolved, which is usually not an issue, and with the pre-measured packets, on the go feeding can be a breeze.

If you’re worried about mixing and adding those additional steps, many companies have a pre-mixed option on the market. The pros? These feedings are shelf stable when they’re unopened and are easy to toss into a bag and go. They require nothing more than cracking open the seal and adding to a bottle of choice.

Cons? These pre-mixed versions, unless you’re bulk shopping, are usually more expensive per ounce than their powder counterparts, and still need to be refrigerated if you’re not using the whole container in one sitting. Even the travel sized bottles are about 8 ounces, so if you have a newborn that isn’t taking in that amount, you’ll still be working with bottles in and out of the refrigerator.

Are the ingredients different with both? Not at all; so if you’re worried about several steps, need a better water source for your formula or just want to make sure the process is seamless, take a look at the pre-mixed bottles in your preferred brand. Powder is just as great - and the best thing is that your baby won’t know the difference, so it’s personal preference at work here!

We’re in a great time and technological advancement that formula today is better than ever!
