No, You Don’t Need A Doula To Have a Great Birth
Loads of times, especially when present in a support group online, I hear expectant families inquiring about how to best prepare for their birth. A common comment is ‘You NEED a doula!”. Do I believe this is necessary to have the birth you expect and want?
Nope.
You don’t NEED a doula.
A doula won’t make or break your birth experience. She won’t stop you from having a cesarean if that’s the path your birth is headed. She won’t be able to magically turn around a birth’s course, take away all your sensations, and give you everything your heart desires.
Similarly, you don’t NEED to have a wedding planner. You can find your own venue, price check and find the best floral arrangements, interview and organize photographers and hand write invitations.
You’re capable of doing those things.
However, that might create a large amount of stress. You might worry that you didn’t find the right color for the ribbons for the bouquet. You might not have enough time to do your hair and makeup, and it might not turn out just the way you envisioned because you were too worried about the late caterers and making sure your sister put the table arrangements in the right place.
It would be much less stressful, and much easier and more supported, to have someone to take care of all the details you don’t want to have to worry about in the moment. You’d be able to sit back and enjoy the experience of the day, knowing that someone was there to help with all of the hiccups and gathering the things most important to your relaxation and enjoyment of that special moment.
A doula provides this for your birth. She isn’t needed, but wanted. Her help can make your day and all the days prior feel less frantic. Her constant support during your birth can allow you to connect with your partner and know you are capable of having a great birth!
Will you survive without her? Yes!
But would you want to?
